There are so many different aspects of building yourself a garden railway, and more and more people are realising how satisfying and rewarding a hobby it really is, not to mention a great way of spicing up your garden. The miniature rail has come so far from it’s birth in the 1840’s, and is no longer a mere toy but an art. The best miniature model garden railways I’ve ever seen was on a school trip to Bekonscot near my home town. Not just a miniature railway, it’s an entire village scaled right down. The railway is a ten scale mile model of 1:32 scale, and the village itself is a 1:12 scale. The railway line was created around 1929 and has been repaired, added to and enlarged constantly ever since! As it winds its way around the village, teeny tiny passengers peer out of the windows at beautifully made miniature houses and carefully selected foliage. It was such a simple yet fun day out, and I even ran into the filming crew for Blue Peter whilst I was there, as they were doing a short segment on Bekonscot. A good garden railway is a delight for all ages and will continue to provide hours of entertainment even after you’ve finished building it… That is, if you can ever bare to say it’s finished! Chances are you’ll be adding bits and bobs forever.
