Engineering was something that made Britain great. Around the time of the industrial revolution, as people flocked in their masses from the countryside to the towns, there was an incredible increase in the quality and complexity of the engineering that went on, as well as an increase in the complexity.
New systems were being developed to achieve things that would have frankly seemed impossible only a few decades before. Great bridges were built, monumental undertakings undertook, and new forms of transport invented and utilised. And all of that pretty much without any large scale involvement of electricity. No, all the power came from good, honest, old fashioned, coal powered steam. There is something really rather wonderful about the complexity of the assortment of moving parts that you will find within a steam engine, knowing that they all work in harmony, turning one another to achieve something magnificent.
We therefore want to say ‘good work’ to those who carry on the good work of the engineer in miniature, who replicate the fantastic achievements of the fellows who helped make this country great – there’s every reason to celebrate this part of this country’s heritage. NB
