No birthday present has brought me more joy over the years than that one I received on my 6th birthday- a little wooden Wendy House. It has window boxes stuffed with red and yellow geraniums and my mum had dug out a path and lined it with tiny wild strawberry plants. Inside I put various carpet off cuts and cardboard boxes with home appliances drawn on them, and that is where my sister and I would play for hours. Strangely enough, maintaining and expanding my little garden plot was all I cared about for a couple of years. The geraniums and strawberries stayed, and I added a fern, some mint and a long line of sunflowers, which were my absolute pride and joy. I was a little disgruntled when I sent some seeds to my aunt and hers grew to nearly twice the height of mine, but that was only really because her garden plot was much deeper than mine… and she was a professional gardener… Anyway, the real trauma came one morning when I went downstairs to give all the plants a good soaking. Some cheeky little thing had gone around half my sunflowers in the night and had picked out the seeds in the heart of the flower, leaving them somewhat dry and dishevelled looking. To this day I still hold a grudge against those darned grey squirrels who eat my precious sunflowers…
